Nungua/Teshie, Greater Accra, Ghana — Korklu’s Foundation, in collaboration with Indigenous Heritage Africa, has launched a 24-Hour Coastal Fishing Business Initiative, an innovative programme aimed at strengthening the livelihoods of people engaged in coastal fishing and related economic activities.

The initiative reflects a commitment to promoting sustainable economic opportunities within Ghana’s coastal communities while preserving the rich cultural and fishing heritage that has sustained generations of families.

Promoting a Stronger Coastal Fishing Economy

Fishing remains an important source of livelihood for many families along Ghana's coastline. Beyond providing food and employment, the fishing industry supports a wider network of businesses, including fish processing, transportation, trading, boat operations, net making and other small-scale enterprises.

The 24-Hour Coastal Fishing Business Initiative seeks to build on this economic potential by encouraging a more vibrant and productive coastal business environment.

The programme also provides an opportunity to bring together fishermen, fish processors, traders, community leaders, traditional authorities, development organizations and other stakeholders to discuss practical ways of improving the coastal fishing economy.

Preserving Indigenous Heritage

A significant feature of the programme is its connection to indigenous heritage. The collaboration between Indigenous Heritage Africa and Korklu’s Foundation demonstrates the importance of combining economic development with the preservation of local culture and traditions.

Coastal fishing is not simply an economic activity; it forms an important part of the identity and heritage of many communities. Traditional knowledge about the sea, fishing techniques, boats, fishing seasons and community practices has been passed from one generation to another.

The initiative therefore provides a platform for celebrating this heritage while exploring modern approaches that can make coastal livelihoods more sustainable and economically beneficial.

Creating Opportunities for Young People

One of the major opportunities presented by initiatives of this nature is the possibility of engaging young people in productive economic activities.

With appropriate training, mentorship and access to opportunities, young people can participate not only directly in fishing but also in areas such as:

Fish processing and packaging

Fish marketing and distribution

Cold-chain businesses

Boat and fishing-equipment services

Digital marketing and sales

Tourism and cultural activities

Small and medium-scale coastal enterprises

This broader approach can help create an ecosystem in which the benefits of the fishing industry extend beyond the fishermen themselves.

A Platform for Community Development

The launch also represents an opportunity for stronger collaboration among stakeholders interested in the development of coastal communities.

For Korklu’s Foundation, whose vision is expressed through the message “Inspire. Empower and Transform,” programmes such as this can serve as platforms for identifying community needs and connecting local people with partners, resources and development opportunities.

The initiative can also encourage dialogue around issues affecting coastal communities, including livelihood development, responsible use of marine resources, community participation and the protection of Ghana's coastal heritage.

Looking Ahead

The success and long-term impact of the 24-Hour Coastal Fishing Business Initiative will depend on continued collaboration among community members, government institutions, traditional leaders, development organizations, private-sector partners and other stakeholders.

By bringing economic empowerment and indigenous heritage together, the programme has the potential to become more than a fishing initiative. It can serve as a model for community-based economic development, cultural preservation and livelihood empowerment in Ghana's coastal communities.

The launch of the initiative marks an important step toward creating new opportunities for coastal communities and strengthening the economic value of an industry that remains deeply connected to Ghana's history and identity.
